About CVM34

Rev. Harold Naylor, S.J.

¡£Fr. Naylor has taught F.3 Ethics for years and he is very popular among his students¡¤

The Name of the Father of Country! No 34 of CVM was a surprise. It is creative and contemporary. And important for the Year of God the Father.

Peter LAI Yiu Hang and Ah Man did well as presenters-they were humorous and did some clowning. The background they used was new fresh and natural which is attractive. Most of the audience could identify with them, and they do represent the leaders of Catholic Hong Kong.

What is your name, is important and very often used. Mr. And Mrs. Leung with their three young children were an attractive couple and they engaged in the exercise of choosing a suitable name and also a Christian Name. This was done well. I often ask students the origin of their Chinese name and more often than not I do not get a satisfactory answer-they like nick names and to make new and popular names!

But you only used this as an introduction to a very deep biblical and theological issue of the "Name of God" and how we are to address the Lord in our prayer. With Sr. Wong Fung Yee (who came across attractively and scholarly) Fr. Peter Choy and Fr. Lawrence Lee, we were offered the best of teaching on Yahweh, Adonai and Elohim, and their rendering in Chinese Nga Wai, Tin Chue, Sheung Chue. This is a critical issue in ecumenical contacts. But the whole point is that we address God as Father, and you explained this well, with the cautious of reverence. (Your notes, included on a separate sheet, on the Scriptural references are good, as well as what was on the screen.)

Not only did you do well, but the artistic background and the lettering was expert. You are in visuals, not only in audio, and are excellent. Congratulations. I look forward with great expectation to the follow-up which is promised.

Your introduction of Good Shepherd Sisters was novel and well done. I know them all well at Marycove. I only saw your back at the camera. The Good Shepherd Parable was taught with the background of their work with girls in difficulties. Well-done historical, religious, spiritual and local catholic social service.

Then came the surprise of the art of Giovani Francaville in St. Joseph's Church, Macau. Marciano Baptista introduced it well. I had heard of this place, so it was good to see it .

You introduced the history of the parish, and I trust you will continue with such a series. We saw photographs of the building of the church and its roots in the Precious Blood Convent. More precious was the sight of Fr. Vinent Lau and the story of his family. Now this is contemporary history and what is most suitable for a Catholic Magazine. Congratulations. But I must say that I never heard of the Church of the Five Wounds of St. Francis. That can distinguish it from other churches of St. Francis.

The MEP Fathers are all known to me, so I was glad you had an episode on them, in the light of the history of the Diocese. You rightly began with Bethany, but I think Nazareth did not get a message. Frs. Lepeu, Tisserand, Rabiller, Lam Minh, Demolliens and Billaud are known to me. You had them around a table, and gave Gabriel Lajeune a good chance to speak. Their background was also shown in terms of today. But their history goes back to the beginnings of Hong Kong.

Lastly came a drama from Lai King Catholic Secondary. I did not get the point! But it did tell the history of jealousy and quarreling between two girls. I hope the point got across, but I could not see its relation to the parable of the tenants of the vineyard!
