1897 年， 嬰 孩 耶 穌 德 蘭 修 女 在 法 國 里 修 的 加 爾 默 羅 跣 足 修 院 ( 又 名 聖 衣 會 修 院 ) 病 逝 時 ， 只 是 一 位 藉 藉 無 名 的 年 輕 聖 衣 會 修 女 ， 年 僅 二 十 四 歲 ， 在 修 院 渡 過 九 年 簡 樸 、 靜 默 的 默 觀 祈 禱 隱 修 生 活 ； 但 一 年 後 ， 她 的 自 傳 卻 獲 得 全 球 各 地 稱 許 ， 其 後 更 被 翻 譯 為 多 國 文 字 ； 中 譯 本 就 有 馬 相 伯 的 「 靈 心 小 史 」 、 蘇 雪 林 的「 一 朵 小 白 花 」 ， 和 張 秀 亞 的 「 回 憶 錄 」 。

德 蘭•瑪 爾 定 生 於 1873 年 一 月 二 日 法 國 亞 冷 松 的 一 個 虔 誠 公 教 家 庭 ， 是 路 易 • 馬 爾 定 和 瑞 梨 • 葛 林 最 小 的 孩 子 ， 馬 爾 定 夫 婦 共 有 九 個 孩 子 ， 其 中 四 個 夭 折 ； 路 易 是 鐘 錶 商 人 ， 而 瑞 梨 是 做 花 邊 的 生 意 ； 一 家 生 活 幸 福 ， 敬 愛 天 主 ， 所 以 小 德 蘭 自 小 便 在 一 個 充 滿 愛 和 祈 禱 氣 氛 中 生 活 。 她 四 歲 時 ， 母 親 病 逝 ， 舉 家 遷 往 里 修 。

小 德 蘭 不 是 天 生 就 是 聖 女 ， 她 也 曾 為 自 己 執 拗 的 稟 性 爭 扎 ， 經 驗 到 失 敗 和 挫 折 感 ， 但 她 明 白 ， 只 有 全 心 仰 賴 天 主 的 恩 寵 ， 賦 與 她 力 量 ， 才 能 接 納 自 己 的 軟 弱 和 限 制 。 自 稱 為 「 耶 穌 的 小 花 」 的 小 德 蘭 ， 很 早 便 想 完 全 奉 獻 給 天 主 ， 礙 於 她 執 著 的 主 意 和 太 敏 感 的 性 格 ， 使 她 內 心 起 了 很 大 的 爭 扎 ， 也 受 了 不 少 苦 。 十 歲 時 ， 「 得 勝 聖 母 像 」 顯 靈 治 癒 了 她 的 奇 疾 。 1886 年 聖 誕 夜 ， 她 更 獲 得 天 主 特 恩 ， 身 心 才 獲 得 完 全 痊 癒 。

她 在 十 五 歲 時 得 到 特 准 ， 進 入 聖 衣 會 修 院 ， 取 名 為 嬰 孩 耶 穌 • 聖 容 • 德 蘭 修 女 。 在 她 短 短 九 年 的 修 道 生 活 中 ， 渡 著 忠 信 、 全 心 愛 主 的 簡 樸 、 謙 遜 的 隱 修 生 活 。 她 從 聖 經 中 獲 得 啟 發 ， 倡 導 她 的 「 愛 的 小 路 」 ─ ─ 就 是 信 賴 與 對 主 完 全 交 付 的 靈 修 方 法 ， 對 天 主 的 慈 愛 完 全 委 順 ； 在 1895 年 ， 她 自 獻 於 天 主 仁 慈 的 愛 情 ， 作 為 全 燔 犧 牲 。 在 她 生 命 的 最 後 日 子 ， 了 解 到 自 己 的 使 命 是 在 「 慈 母 教 會 心 中 的 愛 」 ， 並 將 渡 生 於 天 以 造 福 於 地 。

聖 德 蘭 於 1897 年 九 月 三 十 日 逝 世； 1925 年 列 入 聖 品 ， 教 宗 比 約 十 一 世 稱 她 為 「 在 他 教 宗 任 內 的 一 顆 明 星 」 ， 奉 她 為 歐 洲 主 保 ， 1927 年 宣 佈 她 為 傳 教 區 主 保 。 1997 年 十 月 十 九 日 ， 教 宗 若 望 保 祿 二 世 冊 封 她 為 「 教 會 聖 師 」 。

小 德 蘭 雖 然 逝 世 超 過 百 年 ， 仍 被 天 主 教 徒 視 為 聖 德 的 典 範 ， 尤 其 是 她 那 建 基 於 福 音 訓 導 的 神 修 方 法 ─ ─ 「 赤 心 之 路 」 ， 影 響 了 教 會 的 神 修 。 這 位 里 修 的 小 聖 女 一 直 都 滿 全 了 她 在 世 的 諾 言 ─ ─ 從 天 上 沛 降 玫 瑰 花 雨 ( 即 天 主 的 恩 寵 ) ；因 為 一 個 世 紀 以 來 ， 不 少 人 都 經 驗 到 因 她 的 代 禱 所 獲 得 的 恩 寵 ； 而 里 修 這 個 法 國 的 小 鎮 ， 更 成 了 信 友 們 的 朝 聖 地 。

St. Therese of Lisieux （1873-1897 )

The Story of a Soul

In 1897, Therese of the Jesus Christ passed away at the Convent of Camelite Sisters, Lisieux, France, she was only a young ordinary Camelite Sister, in the age of 24, after a period of nine years, she has had a simple life, a life of prayer and contemplation. But one year later, her bibliography is acknowledged all over the world, and was later translated into several languages. Chinese version with "The Story of the Soul" by Ma Sheung Pak; "The Little White Flower" by So Suk Lam and "A Memoir" by Cheung Shua Ah.

In 1925, there were nearly one million people gathered in Rome participating the canonization of Therese. She has been acclaimed the "Greatest Saint of Modern Times" by Pope Pius X, this newly saint was respected and acknowledged by all churches in the world. Churches also worshipped her statue, from the statue of Therese, we can always see an angel smile on her face.

Therese Martin was born to a devoted Catholic family on January 2, 1873 in Alencon, France. She was the youngest child of Louis Martin and Zelie Guerin. Therese was the youngest of a family of nine, but four of her brothers and sisters died at a young age. Martin was a watchmaker's businessman and Zelie run lacework business. They lived a happy life, in a devoted Catholic family, therefore since Therese was small, she was living in an atmosphere of love and prayer. Her mother died when Therese was four, the whole family then moved to Lisieux.

Although Therese was not an inborn saint, she had struggled for her insistence and had experienced failure and the suffer of setbacks, she understood that only she dedicated herself wholeheartedly to God's grace, to be empowered in God's strength in order to accept her own weakness and restraints. Therese claimed herself "The Little Flower of Jesus", from earlier times, she wanted to dedicate herself completely to God, but due to her insistence and over-sensitivity, she experienced a large struggle deep inside her heart and also suffered a lot. When Therese was ten, Our Lady of Victories' Marian apparition which cured her serious illness. At the Christmas Eve of 1886, she even was endowed with God's grace, physical and mental illness were totally recovered.

When Therese was fifteen, she was granted the permission to enter Camelites Convent, known as Therese of Child Jesus. In her short period of nine years' spent in the convent, Therese lived a simple and humble contemplative life which was loyal and loving God. She was inspired by the Scriptures which made her advocating "The Little Way", i.e. her spirituality is to believe in God and wholly devoted to God, to submit to God's love; in 1895, she dedicated herself in God's grace with her whole sacrifice to God. In the very end of her life, Therese felt her own mission is on "The Love of the Holy Mother Church", through God's kindness to dedicate herself to the worldly people.

For he said to Moses, "I will have mercy on anyone I wish; I will take pity on anyone I wish." So then, everything depends, not on what we humans want or do, but only on God's mercy.

Therese died on 30 September 1897, she was canonized on 1925 and was Pope Piu XI declared her a "star" of his pontificate", claimed her the patroness in Europe, and was proclaimed Therese the Patron of the diocese in 1927. In 19 October 1997, Pope Paul II declared her a Doctor of the Church.

Though Therese has died over 100 years, she was treated as the exemplary of virtues by the Catholics, especially her spirituality which was founded on Gospel Teaching, i.e. "Spiritual Childhood" which affects the church's spirituality. Little Therese of Lisieux for ages had fulfilled her worldly promise, i.e. to bring God's mercy from heaven; as for centuries, many people have experienced the grace derived from Therese's prayer for them; Lisieux, a little town in France, even became the pilgrimage centre for the Catholics.
